Insurance CoverageMembers' individual Savings and CD accounts are insured up to $500,000. IRA accounts are separately insured for $500,000. And for joint accounts, each account holder's interest is added together and insured up to another $500,000.
The first $250,000 of coverage on savings and $250,000 on IRAs is provided by the National Credit Union Administration, an agency of the U.S. government. (Note: The NCUA increased the federal coverage on savings from $100,000 to $250,000 on Oct. 3, 2008 with the passage of the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008. This increase is in effect through December 31, 2013.)
Our supplemental $250,000 insurance coverage is provided by the Excess Share Insurance Corp., the leading private deposit insurer in the country. This supplemental insurance is only available to select credit unions that meet the insurer's strict underwriting requirements. Atlantic Federal pays all the premiums for this insurance.
